City’s new kits pay tribute to Manchester’s industrial and cultural heritage

Published

New Delhi: Top English Premier League (EPL) club Manchester City launches their home and away kits for the 2019-20 season, a media statement revealed. The new kits, created by leading sportswear brand Puma, pay tribute to Manchester’s industrial and cultural heritage.

Following Manchester City’s unprecedented success last season in men’s, women’s and academy football, the club will push for new honours this season, wearing uniquely designed kits that also feature the Club’s 125th anniversary crest.

The home kit draws inspiration from Manchester’s industrial heritage, celebrating the true grit, fight, and character that emerged from the cotton mills of Manchester. The woven jacquard wave pattern, running through the shirt, is a visual representation of the looms which were integral to the industrial revolution in Manchester. The iconic City blue is highlighted with purple, a colour previously used in club kits, and is used on the home shirt for the first time.

The new away kit celebrates the city’s “Madchester” years, a period of extraordinary cultural activity in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The kit is directly inspired by former nightclub, The Haçienda, which was once an epicentre for emerging music, bands, DJs, and artists. Using black colour as a base, this away kit features yellow stripes on the left shoulder: a reference to The Haçienda’s iconic graphic identity. Additional peach and City blue pops create a colourful representation of this legendary cultural icon that was the heartbeat of the city.

“The partnership between Manchester City and Puma goes beyond football. We want the club’s global fans and local Mancunians to all feel invested in this, and it starts with combining our very creative kit designs with authentic stories from Manchester’s history and music scene,” says Adam Petrick, Puma’s Global Brand Marketing Director.

“We want to bring Manchester City and Puma’s brand initiatives together when and wherever we can, and that means going beyond the pitch, into wider areas of football culture such as gaming, community, fashion and music. That’s how we can really impact football fans of all ages and demographics.”

This approach inspired last night’s official kit launch event, headlined by local musician and City fan Bugzy Malone, which was held at Manchester’s Mayfield Depot, and showcased how music will be integral to the partnership.  Bugzy Malone, alongside Sergio Agüero, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Pep Guardiola, also feature in the launch film.

Awarding six runs for overthrows was a “judgment error” by umpires: Taufel

Published

on

New Delhi: Retired Australian umpire Simon Taufel, who is also on the MCC Laws sub-committee which makes the rules governing cricket, has said that there was an error of judgment on the part of on-field rules officials Marais Erasmus and Kumar Dharmasena in awarding six runs for overthrows on England all-rounder Ben Stokes instead of five.

Taufel was the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) manager of umpire performance and training as recently as 2015.

Speaking to Sydney Morning Herald, Taufel said, “There was a judgment error on the overthrow. The judgment error was the timing of when the fielder threw the ball. The act of the overthrow starts when the fielder releases the ball. That’s the act. It becomes an overthrow from the instant of the throw.”

Chasing 242 for victory, England needed nine from the final three balls of their regulation 50-overs. Stokes struck the ball into the deep off the third-last ball, and tried to complete a second run. However, a throw from New Zealand’s Martin Guptill ricocheted off Stokes’ bat as the batsman dived home, running away for four overthrows. England were awarded six runs.

But, according to Law 19.8, pertaining to an “overthrow or wilful act of fielder”, Stokes should only have been credited for five runs.

“If the boundary results from an overthrow or from the wilful act of a fielder, the runs scored shall be any runs for penalties awarded to either side, and the allowance for the boundary, and the runs completed by the batsmen, together with the run in progress if they had already crossed at the instant of the throw or act,” the law says.

Replays showed that Stokes and non-striker Adil Rashid hadn’t crossed at the time of the throw.

Taufel, who was named ICC umpire of the year every year from 2004 to 2008 and stood in the 2011 World Cup final, backed the on-field umpires but admitted that they had committed a mistake.

“…It’s unfortunate that there was a judgment error on the timing of the release of the ball and where the batsmen were. They did not cross on their second run, at the instant of the throw. So given that scenario, five runs should have been the correct allocation of runs, and Ben Stokes should have been at the non-striker’s end for the next delivery.

“We’re not perfect. You’ve got the best two umpires in the elite panel doing the final. They’re doing their best like the other two teams are. This is just part of the game. I think it’s unfair to say that the World Cup was decided by that one event.”

Squash stars Saurav Ghosal and Joshna Chinappa sign with Baseline Ventures

New Delhi: Baseline Ventures has announced the signing of two of India’s biggest squash stars—Joshna Chinappa and Saurav Ghosal—on their roster of athletes. Both the athletes have been flagbearers for the country in squash and grabbed headlines recently when they won the men’s and women’s title at the Asian Championships in May earlier this year.

Kolkata’s Saurav Ghosal has been a consistent performer for more than a decade and had recently reached his career-best ranking of World No. 10 in April this year, becoming the first Indian to break into the top-10 in the process. The 32-year-old had a prodigious start to his career and had become the first Indian to achieve No. 1 ranking at Junior level in the sport. He was also the first Indian to bag a medal in the sport when he secured a bronze medal at Doha in the 2006 Asian Games.

Joshna Chinappa has been one of India’s finest squash players who has been bringing the country medals for the last 15 years. In 2014, she paired with Dipika Pallikal to win India’s first Commonwealth Games Gold medal in Glasgow, a feat she almost repeated in 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast eventually bagging a silver. 2016 saw her break into the top-10 of squash world rankings. She enjoyed a successful campaign in the Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games where she won the bronze in the singles event and a silver in the team event. In June, she broke the record of Bhuvneshwari Kumari by lifting the national squash title for a record 17th time.

Chinappa expressed her delight on the development, saying, “I’m thrilled to sign with Baseline Ventures and am looking forward to a fruitful association with the company. I have a busy 2019 ahead and I hope to make it count by putting my best foot forward. Ghosal also expressed similar emotions when he said, “It’s been a good year for me personally. After achieving my career-best ranking, I’m really excited to have signed with Baseline Ventures.”

The company that was founded in 2014 is one of the leaders in sports, events, entertainment and licensing in India. They represent and manage some of the biggest names in Indian sports including P.V. Sindhu, Pankaj Advani, Prithvi Shaw, Smriti Mandhana and Ravindra Jadeja among others. Earlier this year, they had also signed shooters Apurvi Chandela and Saurabh Chaudhary apart from table tennis star Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and swimmer Sajan Prakash.
