COVID-19: Sportspersons who have tested positive for coronavirus

New Delhi: The COVID-19 outbreak has forced people to stay at their homes. The world scrambles to ensure containment of the coronavirus that has led the suspensions and cancellations of sporting events across the world. Here is a list of players and sports figures who have tested positive for the coronavirus.

Football

Juventus’ Daniele Rugani became first footballer to have coronavirus. France World Cup winner Blaise Matuidi has contracted the virus while Argentina striker Paulo Dybala said that he has become the third Juventus player to test positive.

Serie A club Hellas Verona confirmed that Mattia Zaccagni has tested positive for coronavirus.

Former AC Milan defender Paolo Maldini revealed that he and his son have also been infected. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has also contracted the virus.

Chelsea are in lockdown after Callum Hudson-Odoi tested positive for COVID-19. Former Turkish national team and ex-Barcelona goalkeeper Rustu Recber is in hospital after testing positive for coronavirus, his wife said.

Last week, Galatasaray manager Fatih Terim said he also tested positive for the virus. Chinese football star Wu Lei, who plays for Espanyol in Spain, has been diagnosed with the coronavirus, said the Chinese Football Association (CFA).

Spanish football clubs Alaves, Valencia and Espanyol have also been hit by the virus.

Basketball

Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert was the first NBA player to test positive for the coronavirus. His teammate, Donovan Mitchell was the second NBA player confirmed to have contracted the virus. Gobert and Mitchell both were later cleared of COVID-19.

Christian Wood

Two members of the Los Angeles Lakers have tested positive as the Philadelphia 76ers also confirmed that three of their players had contracted the disease.

On March 28, the Knicks announced that their team owner, James Dolan had tested positive. Detroit Pistons forward Christian Wood was the third NBA player to test positive of the virus.

 

Kevin Durant is one of four Brooklyn Nets players who have tested positive for the coronavirus. The three others weren’t named by the team. Real Madrid basketball player Trey Thompkins has tested positive, according to the team.

Cricket

Lancashire county cricket club chairman David Hodgkiss has passed away after being infected by the dreaded virus. Former Scotland cricketer Majid Haq, who is of Pakistani descent, has tested positive.

NFL

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton said that he has tested positive for the coronavirus. His is the first known positive test from the NFL.

Golf

Victor Lange of South Africa was diagnosed with COVID-19 upon returning home to Johannesburg on March 9 from playing a PGA Tour Latinoamerica event in Mazatlan, Mexico.

Others

Japan Olympic Committee’s deputy Chief Kozo Tashima said Tuesday he had tested positive for the coronavirus. Pakistani squash great Azam Khan, who won the British Open title successively between 1959 and 1961, has died of coronavirus in London, his family said.
