COVID-19: The sports events affected by Coronavirus

New Delhi: Sporting events all over the world have been affected by the spread of coronavirus.

A look at which events have been affected thus far:

ATHLETICS: The World Athletics Indoor Championships scheduled for Nanjing postponed until next year.

BADMINTON: The China Masters tournament in Hainan was postponed after several players withdrew.

BASKETBALL: Fiba Asia Cup basketball qualifying matches postponed.

The Women’s Olympic qualifying tournament, relocated from Foshan to Belgrade, by world governing body Fiba.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL: A beach volleyball tournament, to be held in Yangzhou, was postponed until after the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

BOXING: The International Olympic Committee moved Olympic boxing qualifiers from Wuhan to Amman.

CRICKET: Ireland women’s cricket tour cancels trip to play in Thailand for a four-team tournament.

FOOTBALL: Juventus vs AC Milan Italian Cup semi-final second leg in Turin postponed.

The Swiss Football League is suspended until 23 March.

International Champions Cup cancelled.

Five Italy’s Serie A matches ordered to be played behind closed doors. Selected A matches postponed. Several matches in Serie B, Serie D and amateur and youth games called off.


Matches in Switzerland’s top two divisions postponed.

Chinese Football Association postpones all domestic matches.

Japan’s J-League postpones all domestic games until mid-March.

China’s 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Maldives and Guam moved to Thailand.

Some matches in South Korea’s K-League were postponed.

The Asian Football Confederation postponed preliminary stage matches of AFC Cup’s East Zone. AFC Cup matches in Vietnam switched to away fixtures.

Asian Champions League matches involving Chinese clubs Guangzhou Evergrande, Shanghai Shenhua and Shanghai SIPG postponed until April.

Chinese women’s national team’s Olympic qualification play-off against South Korea switched to Sydney.

The start of South Korea’s K-League postponed.

TENNIS: ATP has cancelled or postponed six tournaments on the  Challenger Tour. Kunming Open in China’s Anning  is cancelled.

Women’s Xi’an Open in China was cancelled.

China forfeited Davis Cup against Romania.

International Tennis Federation moved the Fed Cup Asia/Oceania Group I event out of Dongguan to Dubai.

HOCKEY: Hockey Pro League matches between China and Australia, to take place in Changzhou, were postponed.

WRESTLING: The Asian Olympic Games qualifying event in Kyrgyzstan cancelled.

MOTORSPORT: The season opening two MotoGP races cancelled.

The second World Superbikes race of the season in Qatar is postponed.

The Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai is postponed.

The all-electric Formula E motor racing series abandoned plans for a race in Sanya.


DISABILITY SPORT: Japan Para Wheelchair Rugby Championships is cancelled.

The World Shooting Para Sport World Cup, to be held in the UAE is cancelled.

SPORT CLIMBING: Olympic test event in Tokyo to be held without athletes.

TRIATHLON: The opening event in the World Triathlon Series in Abu Dhabi postponed.

CYCLING: UAE Tour cancelled.

SKIING: The annual Engadin ski marathon in Switzerland is cancelled.

RUGBY UNION: Ireland v Italy’s Six Nations game in Italy postponed.

Ospreys and Ulster’s Pro14 trips to play in Italy postponed.

Scotland Women’s Six Nations match with Italy postponed.

RUGBY SEVENS: The Singapore and Hong Kong legs of the World Rugby Sevens Series were postponed from April until October.

SKATING: World Short Track Speed Skating Championships, due to take place in Seoul, South Korea, is cancelled.

TABLE TENNIS: World Table Tennis Championships in South Korea are postponed.

OLYMPICS: International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound says preparations for the Tokyo Games in July are “business as usual”.


MMA: Asian mixed martial arts One Championship takes place behind closed doors.

WEIGHTLIFTING: The Asian weightlifting championships, scheduled for March, were relocated from Kazakhstan to Uzbekistan.

GYMNASTICS: The Chinese team pulled out of the Gymnastics World Cup in Melbourne.

GOLF: Maybank Championship and Volvo China Open, both scheduled for April, were postponed.

PGA Tour Series-China postponed two qualifying tournaments and cut number of regular season tournaments from 14 to 10.

Honda LPGA Thailand event in Pattaya and HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore were postponed.

The Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific golf championship, due to take place in Thailand, rescheduled for October.

The LPGA golf tour cancelled the Blue Bay tournament due to be held on Hainan Island.

SNOOKER: China Open in Beijing was postponed.
