Kolkata: The storied Eden Gardens cricket stadium is set to be used as a maakeshift quarantine centre for Kolkata police personnel who have tested positive for COVID-19.

Kolkata Police have written a letter to Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Abhishek Dalmiya requesting allocation of five blocks of the stadium to them “free of cost”.

The city’s hospitals are under growing pressure and hundreds of beds are to be set up in the iconic stadium.

Nearly 550 Kolkata police staff have tested positive for COVID-19 and two have died.

The beds will be put in galleries around the seating.

The stadium is also used by Indian Premier League side Kolkata Knight Riders but this year’s tournament has been repeatedly postponed because of the pandemic.

India’s nationwide coronavirus toll rose to over 820,000 cases on Saturday with 22,193 deaths.
