Sachin Tendulkar-led cricketing world shower birthday wishes on Sunil Gavaskar

New Delhi: India batting legend Sachin Tendulkar wished his idol Sunil Gavaskar, who turned 71 on Friday, a happy birthday.

Tendulkar wrote on Twitter: “I got to meet my idol Gavaskar sir for the first time in 1987. As a 13 year old I couldn’t believe my luck that I was meeting the person I looked up to and wanted to emulate. What a day that was. Wishing you a very happy 71st Birthday sir. Have a healthy and safe year ahead.”

Tendulkar was part of the cricket fraternity who Gavaskar on his birthday.

Gavaskar played in 125 Tests for India, scoring 10122 runs at an average of 51.12 with 34 Test centuries and 45 fifties.

Gavaskar also scored 3,092 runs from 108 One-Day Internationals, averaging 35.13.

International Cricket Council said Gavaskar is the first Indian fielder to claim 100 Test catches.

The right-handed batsman was the first batsman in Test cricket to breach the 10000-run mark barrier and was the first batsman to score hundreds in both innings of a Test match thrice.

Gavaskar was also part of the Kapil Dev-led Indian side that won the ODI World Cup in 1983.

Former India cricketers VVS Laxman, Suresh Raina and Mohammed Kaif also paid tribute to the ‘Little Master’.

Kuldeep Yadav wrote, “Happy birthday to the legend, #SunilGavaskar sir. You have inspired a generation to take up the sports. Wishing you good health & happiness.”

Sunil Gavaskar, as per reports, has decided to sponsor heart surgeries for 35 children in a Mumbai hospital.
