Serena in semis with 100th US Open win, Dimitrov fells Federer

New York: Twenty three-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams opened the Arthur Ashe Stadium program Tuesday with a virtuous performance, beating Qiang Wang, 6-1, 6-0 to reach the 2019 US Open semifinals.

It will be the 13th appearance in the Open final four for the six-time winner. This was her 100th match win here, coming 30 years to the day when Hall of Famer Chris Evert won her tournament record 101st win.

“It never crossed my mind that I would get to 100,” Williams told the fans.

The fifth-seeded Ukrainian improved to 5-0 against Konta with a resilient 6-4, 6-4 win against the 16th-seeded Brit, who was trying to reach her first US Open semifinal and become only the sixth active female player to reach all four Grand Slam semifinals.

Konta had overcome prior unfavorable head-to-heads already this US Open, beating Karolina Pliskova for only the second time in eight tries.

But Svitolina, who reached her first Slam semifinal at Wimbledon, was too consistent and too steady in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Dimitrov stuns Federer

Grigor Dimitrov came from two sets to one down to shock the five-time champion Roger Federer 3-6, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, advancing to his first semi-final in Flushing Meadows.

The 28-year-old had never beaten the third seed in seven previous head-to-head meetings, winning just two of 18 sets in those matchups.

He will meet Daniil Medvedev in the semis.

The No. 5 seed, Russian Daniil Medvedev, overcame an injury to his left quadriceps and heavy hitting from Stan Wawrinka, the 2016 US Open champion, to advance to his first career Grand Slam semifinal, 7-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
